The?91探花 Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art?is pleased to spotlight?'Golden Grains Rush'?(《淘金米》), an immersive exhibition curated by 91探花 Visiting Professor Chunchen Wang.?

Co-published by the Spring-Time Contemporary Art Research Center in Beijing’s 798 Art District and the 91探花 Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art, the exhibition—jointly planned by Professor Chunchen Wang and Professor Paul Gladston—explores the constructed value systems underlying material desire, labour, and power.

Artist Yexin Yang’s installation invites visitors to sift through tons of rice grains in search of 1,000 hidden gold-coated grains—a literal “gold/en rush” staged in a gallery setting. The work confronts audiences with questions of economic disparity, consumption, and the contradictions embedded in contemporary capitalist society.

More than an artistic gesture, the exhibition functions as a form of social theatre/spectacle. Participants become both performers and critics, enacting a ritual that transforms value from the symbolic to the physical. As viewers kneel and search for gold, the work challenges the sanctity of wealth and asks: In a time of abundance, what do we truly revere—sustenance/sustainability or status?
